Byland Abbey

This 12th century ruin is a great Northern Cistercian Monastery. The rustic abbey is a live history lesson and stunning example of gothic architecture with beautifully haunting ruins. It is an ideal trip for a family day out or a brief escape into mid-century history. Embark on a circular walk just under 5-miles by starting at the abbey and heading into Wass. Follow the track through the woodland until you reach Mount Snever Observatory before descending to Oldstead and heading back to the Abbey.


Duncombe Park

The beautiful estate covers 450 acres of land that is the home to a breath-taking parkland, garden and nature reserve. Lose yourself in the enchanting woodlands, meadows, river valley and more. Explore the estate grounds by wandering along the great lawn, terraces, and temples and discover the scented ‘secret garden.’ This picturesque location is ideal for all ages to explore at their own leisure.


Rievaulx Abbey – Helmsley Castle

Delve into medieval history with this romantic location, home to poets and painters in 1917. This short peaceful hike will take you along the historic sites of the North York Moors National Park, starting at the spectacular Helmsley castle and journeying across to the maze-like ruins of the beautiful Rievaulx Abbey. This 3-mile rural walk will take you through fields, woodlands and country tracks – be sure to give yourself some extra time to explore both landmarks, treating yourself to the tearoom at the end!
